Our Craft How Prowood
powers precision

Precision starts in the timber. Prowood Radiata Pine. Grown in New Zealand, then kiln-dried to a stable moisture profile, scanned for straight grain, and graded to remove imperfections. Every length arrives uniform, consistent and machine-ready.

This discipline delivers innate strength and shape that holds with no sap stain. Each piece is processed with purpose, delivering repeatable quality and grain-aligned components that assemble without rework. What begins with care endures with confidence. Precision, by design.

WHERE PRECISION BEGINS "Customers trust Prowood because we trust them."

Woodman by name and by nature, John knows timber. With a background in carpentry and decades of experience, he’s spent his career transforming raw logs into precision components built to last.

Since founding Prowood in 2002, John has approached every relationship the same way he mills timber – with care, consistency, and purpose. His first instinct is always to ask: what’s missing, and how can we fix it? That question still drives him, shaping solutions to meet real challenges in the field, keeping Alliance connected to the beekeepers it serves.

For John, precision is more than accuracy, it’s a responsibility. Every decision reflects a promise: wooden hiveware crafted with integrity, built for performance, and designed to sustain bees, beekeepers, and the wider ecosystem.

As the backbone of the Alliance Powered by Prowood partnership, John guides a collaboration built on accuracy and trust. From sourcing dry, consistent Prowood Radiata Pine to machining fine tolerances, John demands consistency that ensures hiveware assembles easily, holds its shape, and performs. No sap stain. No compromise.

John’s outlook is resolute: precision isn’t just a process, it’s a principle. It guides the quality of the product and the relationships behind it. When the hiveware’s right, everything else follows.

TURNING INSIGHT INTO IMPACT"When the beekeeper thrives, the hive does too. That’s where the story starts."

Burkley knows hiveware isn’t just about timber – it’s about empowering beekeepers to build stronger, more resilient businesses. By understanding the environment, climate, and seasonal pressures they face, he helps deliver the right product, with the right fit, at the right time.

Timber runs three generations deep in Burkley’s story. As the son of John Woodman, he carries legacy into innovation and purpose into product, combining instinct and insight to shape natural solutions for a natural system.

Burkley tells the Alliance story: it starts with the timber. Every piece of Prowood Radiata Pine is tested and graded for moisture, grain, knots, and sap stain with nothing left to chance. By choosing fast-growing, New Zealand–grown pine known for its strength and stability, Alliance ensures the straight grain that makes for superior hiveware.

He amplifies the Alliance difference: precision you can see, consistency you can trust. And beyond the boardroom, he knows trust isn’t pitched, it’s built – piece by piece, decision by decision.

For Burkley, Alliance is more than a supplier – it’s a partner in the hive. His strategy sharpens the Alliance edge by turning customer challenges into impactful solutions, whether refining pre-drilled joins or rethinking packaging. And when the market shifts, he ensures Alliance shifts with it.

KEEPING PRECISION ON TRACK"Precision increases efficiency, and earns trust where it matters."

Balraj keeps everything moving, from raw timber to finished hiveware. With over 13 years at Alliance, he knows quality starts long before the end of the line. Overseeing sales, production, and logistics, Raj ensures the delivery of exactly what’s promised, when promised.

Bridging two worlds, Raj combines a deep understanding of the beekeeping industry and a mastery of the timber that supports it. Under his direction, Alliance operates its sawmill, kiln-dries every length of Prowood Radiata Pine, and scans with precision optimisers to select the straightest grain.

He makes sure every box holds up – through shipping, stacking, and seasons of use; as dependable in transit as it is in the field.

For Raj, precision means everything fits exactly as it should, so when a beekeeper chooses Alliance hiveware, it works every time. No re-machining, splitting on assembly or warping in weather. Just timber that behaves the way it should.

Working closely with customers and production, Raj knows consistency is the currency of trust. Each delivery promises hiveware crafted with care to protect bees, support beekeepers, and honour the environment that sustains them.

For him, sales isn’t about the pitch, it’s about the follow-through. Connecting the need to what’s delivered – nothing gets lost in between.

  • Custom sizes

Our standard products are based on Langsttroth sizes. However, for custom sizes, we’re happy to manufacture something new.

  • Higher insulation

We use 22mm (7/8”) timber for our beehive boxes, providing higher insulation for bees than plastic hives or hives using thinner timber.

  • Deeper handles

Using 22mm (7/8”) timber means deeper handles are cut. This makes it easier for beekeepers to lift heavier boxes without using lifting cleats.

  • Straight grains

Only timber with straight grains is used for Alliance frames, ensuring frames stay straight without splitting upon assembly with nails or staples.

  • Alignment

Our products are all precisely aligned, so you will not have to worry about an unstable product.
